Meaning, intentionality and communication

چکیده
This article probes the connections between the metaphysics of meaning and the investigation of human communication. It first argues that contemporary philosophy of mind has inherited most of its metaphysical questions from Brentano’s puzzling definition of intentionality. Then it examines how intentionality came to occupy the forefront of 40 pragmatics in three steps. (1) By investigating speech acts, Austin and ordinary language philosophers pioneered the study of intentional actions performed by uttering sentences of natural languages. (2) Based on his novel concept of speaker’s meaning and his inferential view of human communication as a cooperative and rational activity, Grice developed a three-tiered model of the meaning of utterances: (i) the linguistic meaning of the uttered 45 sentence; (ii) the explicit truth-conditional content of the utterance; (iii) the implicit content conveyed by the utterance. (3) Finally, the new emerging truth-conditional trend in pragmatics urges that not only the implicit content conveyed by an utterance but its explicit content as well depends on the speaker’s communicative intention.

The Communication of Meaning in Anticipatory Systems: A Simulation Study of the Dynamics of Intentionality in Social Interactions
Psychological and social systems provide us with a natural domain for the study of anticipations because these systems are based on and operate in terms of intentionality. Psychological systems can be expected to contain a model of themselves and their environments; social systems can be strongly anticipatory and therefore co-construct their environments, for example, in techno-economic (co-)ev...
متن کاملMaking Meaning in Computers: Synthetic Ethology Revisited
Synthetic ethology was developed as a methodology for constructing experiments in which artificial agents could exhibit real (i.e., not simulated) intentionality and other mental phenomena. This report has two purposes. The first is to review the motivations for synthetic ethology as an experimental methodology and to explain how it can be used to investigate intentionality and meaning, and the...

متن کاملDennett and the Quest for Real Meaning: In defense of a “Myth”
In several recent pieces, Daniel Dennett has advanced a line of reasoning purporting to show that we should reject the idea that there is a tenable distinction to be drawn between the manner in which we represent the way things are and the manner in which “blessedly simple” intentional systems like thermostats and frogs represent the way things are. Through a series of thought experiments, Denn...

Since the publication of RuthMillikan’s Language, Thought, and Other Biological Categories in 1984, a great deal of literature has discussed her so called teleosemantic or biosemantic solution to the problem of intentionality. Only recently, though, has much attention been paid to her co ordinated solution to the problem of productivity. This article, first, clearly describes the problems of in...
